The World Summit on Sustainable
Development was the result of the work of the United Nations
Commission on Sustinable Development.
The
UN-CSD is a follow-up to the UNCED
conference which took place from 3-14 June 1992 in Rio de Janeiro,
Brazil. For 10 years, once a year a meeting took place in which
nations reported to the UN-CSD on the progress they made on
Sustainable Development according to Agenda-21.
At the UN-CSD
7, April
19-21, 1999, tourism was part of the agenda. This meeting resulted in a well
received document on Sustainable Tourism in which responsibilities
for several stakeholders, including tourism industry are described
.
All
these yearly UN-CSD meetings culminated in the
World
Summit on Sustainable Tourism in Johannesburg
from 26 August to 4 September 2002.
This was a major event in the history of sustainable development. In
the final document reference is made to sustainable
tourism.
