Description

The World Summit on Sustainable Development was the result of the work of the United Nations Commission on Sustinable Development.

The UN-CSD is a follow-up to the UNCED conference which took place from 3-14 June 1992 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. For 10 years, once a year a meeting took place in which nations reported to the UN-CSD on the progress they made on Sustainable Development according to Agenda-21. At the UN-CSD 7, April 19-21, 1999, tourism was part of the agenda. This meeting resulted in a well received document on Sustainable Tourism in which responsibilities for several stakeholders, including tourism industry are described

All these yearly UN-CSD meetings culminated in  the World Summit on Sustainable Tourism in Johannesburg from 26 August to 4 September 2002. This was a major event in the history of sustainable development. In the final document reference is made to sustainable tourism
